Green spring

Green spring. State-protected geological monument. This is the most interesting and geologically valuable sinkhole. Currently, it is the deepest cave in Lithuania, included in the Lithuanian Book of Records. The sinkhole of the spring is about 5 m in diameter and 8 m deep. It further branches into two underground halls: “Sunny” and “Aenigma”. So far, the longest measured section of the cave reaches 21 meters (measured from the surface of the spring). The spring erupted in the sinkhole around 1960. Before it opened, the surrounding residents heard an underground rumble, and when the ground collapsed, it deformed the building standing next to it. The water is clear and has the smell of hydrogen sulphide (”rotten eggs”). It is interesting that due to the chemical composition, the water temperature is constant both in summer and winter – about 7-8 degrees. The inflowing spring water does not allow the riverbed to freeze completely, so many waterfowl gather here for the winter. It has been measured that about 10 liters of water flow out from the source to the river in one second. The green spring is like a reminder of Pasvalys of the times of A. Smetona, when the city was famous for its springs and sulphur baths, and even had the status of a resort.

Pasvalys Culture and Recreation Park

Pasvalys Culture and Recreation Park. Those who wish can choose a walk in the forest – in the Pasvalys Culture and Recreation Park. The establishment of the park was started in 1923 and continued to be expanded, now it occupies an area of 70 ha. Folk artists of the region added variety to it with oak sculptures of folklore and mythological themes in 1986-1988. Šilas lake located in the park is interesting because it is of karst origin – merged from several sinkholes and formed by human hands. By the way, it took a lot of effort before it was possible to find and plug the hole through which the water drained somewhere into the dungeons. Various cultural events are held in the park during the summer, sports competitions are held in the stadium. Campsite with cabins awaits tourists.

A collection of bowled stones and millstones

Hundreds of exhibits are gathered in the open-air collection: An exposition of 214 millstones, 64 bowl stones, 7 “footed” stones, 2 boundary stones, and mill gears. They were collected by local researcher Antanas Stapulionis over many years. Large and small millstones bring to mind the ancient craft of grinding grain, both in mills and at home. And the bowl-shaped stones are a legacy of the old Balt religion. Balts used them during ceremonies, worshiping their deities. In later centuries, the stones of the pagan period were adapted for farm purposes: rubbing, pressing, house thresholds, foundations, etc. However, their true purpose and use is not forgotten even in our days.
